The Peoples’ Encyclopaedia of Singapore History (PESH) is a one-stop portal for content relating to Singapore’s heritage. It is a repository of quality written articles, archival photographs and other material relevant to local heritage. Information and articles published on the site will be garnered from a variety of sources, including consolidating existing public access material and inviting contributions from experts and scholars. These materials can be viewed and downloaded for free, although some areas of the site relating to Society matters would be restricted to our members.
While a key feature of the site is its role as a storehouse of textual and visual materials relating to Singapore heritage, it will also a fascinating point of departure for individuals to explore our history, as well as an invaluable resource for students and scholars of history. The portal makes use of interactive tools to allow visitors to contribute content to the site, take part in discussions, trade heritage items and also learn about and ultimately participate in ‘real world’ activities such as history forums, talks, walk and tours.
An important feature of PESH is its interactive nature. Readers, browsers and researchers are encouraged to contribute to the portal. This will not only actively engage our youth in learning about their past, but will also add substantially to the corpus of knowledge about Singapore history generally. This encyclopaedia is a ‘work in progress’ as entries will constantly be added to the portal.
Our Society’s policy is that so long as an entry relates to Singapore’s past and it is accurately written, the entry will be published. This will encourage Singaporeans to take an active part in their past and to seriously investigate their roots. Anyone who has a story, anecdote or trivia to share can make a vital contribution. Over time, as contributions build up, the site will become a unique repository of Singapore’s history. More importantly, it would capture and preserve our collective memory as a nation and as a people. We hope that you will join us in this grand endeavour.
